Waiting until an employee’s laptop crashes before it’s replaced, is not an efficient way to manage your technology!
Due to their mobility, laptops are more prone to damage and will typically need replacing every 3-5 years. But in-between times, every laptop will show warning signs when they need to be replaced.
What are the 5 signs a laptop needs replacing?
If an employee’s laptop shows any of the following signs, you need to get in touch with us so we can advise you on whether it can be repaired or if it needs replacing.
Sign #1: Things seem to be slowing down
The whole purpose of technology is to make our lives easier and to help our teamwork more efficiently. So if an employee is complaining their laptop is slow, they are telling you their technology is hampering their productivity.
An aging laptop will often take longer to power on, turn off, open programs, save files, find internet hits etc. There may be short-term fixes we can do to help a laptop operate more efficiently but slowness is definitely an important sign that a laptop needs replacing.
Sign #2: Unexpected shutdowns
When a laptop unexpectedly shuts down, it could be an urgent sign. If it is beginning to happen often, don’t delay contacting us. We might be able to repair it but it’s probably time for a replacement.
Sign #3: The laptop or its software is no longer supported
Over time, Microsoft and Apple stop supporting older operating systems (software). We also see manufacturers stop supporting particular laptop models. When either of these things happen, it will leave your business more vulnerable to cyber attack. If you have cyber insurance, you may find your policy is void.
Normally, we will give our Managed IT Services clients notice of these things so they can plan for a general upgrade of their equipment and systems.
Sign #4: Noisy fan or feeling hot
Usually these 2 signs run concurrently. If your laptop feels warm or hot to touch then it is working too hard. The noisy fan is your laptop trying to cool itself down. These are important symptoms of a dying laptop so ensure you prioritise getting in touch with us.
Sign #5: The screen isn’t working properly
A screen in trouble may flicker or have black patches. When it comes to laptops, it’s often a sign it has been dropped or damaged in some way. We may be able to repair it but a faulty screen is often a symptom of other damage so don’t delay in contacting us about it.
